Institutions stay away from international
OPP reports today that institutional funds are not returning to international residential property despite the stabilizing of many global markets.
There is a distinct “home bias” in the outlook of many funds with institutions seeing easier and safer returns in their domestic markets. The notable exception are funds in markets which are small so need to geographically diversify to improve returns.
Many funds are still dealing with the fallout from the downturn and a heavily risk averse. Investors are looking for an increase in the turnover of property stock before moving back into international markets.
