British Bankers accused of fraud over Spanish property deals
A fraud investigation is going on at Royal Bank of Scotland after two employees in the foreign mortgage department were accused of taking commissions from Spanish estate agents for referring customers.
When arranging mortgages for those interested in buying homes on the Continent the bankers’ would allegedly offer to put customers in touch with a “trusted” agent who would help them find a property and then pocket thousands in commission payments.
Many of the alleged practices are suspected to have continued to take place since the British taxpayer funded a bail-out of the bank last year.
Two of the men involved in the inquiry are Alan Dawson, who was responsible for Spanish mortgage lending to customers in north-west England, and Simon Clark, who dealt with overseas lending to customers in the midlands.
RBS has been investigating the allegations since May but is yet to alert the police.
