Malaysia – Top 10 research resources
Our regular look at the best internet research resources for emerging property markets focuses this week on
Malaysia, one of southeast Asia’s most dynamic nations. The Malaysian government is actively courting
overseas developers with enterprise incentives with a view to attracting international buyers to its shores.
It’s not just Britain and Europe that are being targeted for investors, with
Indian buyers among those being lured by
Malaysia’s comparatively low property prices and cost of living. Low-cost
flights from Australia are making Malaysia a viable second home destination for buyers there too.
The city of
Kuala Lumpur is one of the key buying areas, along with
Iskandar Malaysia, a development zone set up in the strategically important Johor province, where tax breaks for foreign companies have been introduced to encourage them to move in. Residential property forms a key component of the plan, housing affluent local and immigrant workers. There are some regulations concerning foreign ownership of
property in Malaysia but overall, it’s one of the
least restrictive markets in the southeast Asian region.
We’ve looked at hundreds of websites to select the best relating to the Malaysian property market. If we’ve missed one of your favourites or you have an opinion about our selection, please
post a comment:
Malaysia Property Online. News resource that aggregates stories from numerous Malaysian and international sites, focusing on real estate in Malaysia together with global property stories concerning Malaysian companies.
Iskandar Malaysia. The official website of the flagship development area located in the south of Johor. This extensive site has a wealth of information on the region and the types of development being undertaken there as well as facts and figures on Malaysia itself.
‘Allo Expat Malaysia forum. Lots of real estate-related strands on this well-used forum, which covers many topics relating to buying in, moving to or living in Malaysia. Any forum is only as good as the contributions of its readers, and this is one of the most regularly updated and most wide-ranging in scope that we’ve seen.
Malaysia My Second Home. This is the Malaysian government’s own site for the so-called “MM2H” scheme, outlining the regulations for foreign ownership of property as well as a basic introduction to the country – both worth a look for those new to the Malaysian market.
PwC “Emerging Trends In Real Estate – Asia Pacific 2008”. The second edition of global accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers’ forecast publication focusing on the entire southeast Asian property market (including Malaysia), published jointly with the Urban Land Institute. It’s free to order from the PwC website, you just need to provide registration information.
Doing Business in Malaysia. A Canadian government site giving some advice and insights into doing business in Malaysia that should be of interest to anyone prior to their first face-to-face meetings with partners there.
Asia Monitor. Regional political and economical news and analysis for subscribers focused on southeast Asia, including Malaysia. To receive 12 monthly print and online copies of the magazine, you’ll need to pay the annual $590 (£335) subscription, though you can test the site for free for a limited time before committing yourself.
Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia. The website for REHDA, the organisation that represents over 800 developers in Malaysia, has some basic news and events information, and its regular bulletins are free to download and focus on some interesting topics. There’s also a print directory with member profiles and useful contacts that might be worth a little more than the RM80 (£12.50) cover price for the information it contains.
Oxford Business Group “The Report – Malaysia 2008”. The latest edition of this economic and business review is available in a print version or downloadable PDF. Individual chapters can be downloaded separately for £18 each (there are sections dedicated to real estate, construction and tourism, among others). You can sign up for free, country-specific bi-weekly “briefings” to your inbox too.
Cityscape MIS. News and research site with some free-to-access content, as well as a free weekly email newsletter. Subscribers get unlimited access to the site as well as the company’s region- and country-specific research. Although subscription is expensive at $2,495 (£1,300), you can test the service for a period with a free trial.
