17,000 irregular properties to be legalised

17,000 irregular properties to be legalised
Marbella’s new town plan, which paves the way for 17,000 irregular properties to be legalised, was approved on Friday despite an impasse over what to do with seven illegal developments which have not been recognized in the amnesty.

The seven illegal developments consist of 500 homes, many of which are occupied by overseas property homeowners.  Marbella’s council has been pushing for legalisation but the regional government in Seville wants them to be demolished.

The highest profile project is The Banana Beach Development, where owners have been taking legal action against the authorities, accusing them of inconsistency as other similar properties have been legalised despite identical planning infractions.

The unfortunate result is that the homes of hundreds of overseas property owners will be be almost worthless until a final decision is made, which could be years or perhaps even decades away.
